Bacillus spp. are well known rhizosphere residents of many crops and usually show plant growth promoting (PGP) activities that include biocontrol capacity against some phytopatogenic fungi. Comparison of microbial communities associated with three Atlantic ultramafic hydrothermal systems ArchiMer

The distribution of Archaea and methanogenic, methanotrophic and sulfate-reducing communities in three Atlantic ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems (Rainbow, Ashadze, Lost City) was compared using 16S rRNA gene and functional gene (mcrA, pmoA and dsrA) clone libraries. The overall archaeal community was diverse and heterogeneously distributed between the hydrothermal sites and the types of samples analyzed (seawater, hydrothermal fluid, chimney and sediment). Continuous enrichment cultures: insights into prokaryotic diversity and metabolic interactions in deep-sea vent chimneys ArchiMer

The prokaryotic diversity of culturable thermophilic communities of deep-sea hydrothermal chimneys was analysed using a continuous enrichment culture performed in a gas-lift bioreactor, and compared to classical batch enrichment cultures in vials. Cultures were conducted at 60 degrees C and pH 6.5 using a complex medium containing carbohydrates, peptides and sulphur, and inoculated with a sample of a hydrothermal black chimney collected at the Rainbow field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge, at 2,275 m depth. Diversity of the candidate phylum Poribacteria in the marine sponge Aplysina fulva BJM

Poribacterial clone libraries constructed for Aplysina fulva sponge specimens were analysed with respect to diversity and phylogeny. Results imply the coexistence of several, prevalently "intraspecific" poribacterial genotypes in a single sponge host, and suggest quantitative analysis as a desirable approach in studies of the diversity and distribution of poribacterial cohorts in marine sponges.

Effect of vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging on the microbiological, chemical and sensory properties of tropical red drum ( Sciaenops ocellatus ) fillets stored at 4 °C ArchiMer

Aims The effect of vacuum (VP – 4 °C) and CO2/N2–atmosphere (MAP – 4 °C) packaging on the quality of red drum fillets compared with whole gutted iced fish was investigated. Methods and results A metagenomic approach, bacterial enumeration and isolation, biochemical and sensory analyses were carried out. The organoleptic rejection of whole fish was observed at day 15 whereas VP and MAP fillets appeared unacceptable only after 29 days. At these dates, total mesophilic counts reached 107–108 CFU g− 1. Electroactive Bacteria Associated With Stainless Steel Ennoblement in Seawater ArchiMer

Microorganisms can increase the open-circuit potential of stainless steel immersed in seawater of several hundred millivolts in a phenomenon called ennoblement. It raises the chance of corrosion as the open-circuit potential may go over the pitting corrosion potential. Despite the large impact of the ennoblement, no unifying mechanisms have been described as responsible for the phenomenon. Here we show that the strict electrotroph bacterium "Candidatus Tenderia electrophaga" is detected as an ennoblement biomarker and is only present at temperatures at which we observe ennoblement. Influence of dissolved oxygen content on the bacteria‐induced ennoblement of stainless steels in seawater and its consequence on the localized corrosion risk ArchiMer

The ennoblement of stainless steel (e.g., the increase of open circuit potential [OCP]) is associated with bacterial colonization. This increases the risk of localized corrosion as the critical pitting/crevice potential can be overcome, especially for lower grade stainless steel. In this study, we assessed the influence of dissolved oxygen content (DOC) on the crevice corrosion of duplex and super duplex stainless steels. In addition, we used DNA amplicon sequencing to identify the bacteria most likely associated with the ennoblement. Isolation, molecular characterization and growth-promotion activities of a cold tolerant bacterium Pseudomonas sp. NARs9 (MTCC9002) from the Indian Himalayas Biol. Res.

A bacterium that grows and expresses plant growth promotion traits at 4°C was isolated from the rhizospheric soil of Amaranth, cultivated at a high altitude location in the North Western Indian Himalayas. The isolate was Gram negative and the cells appeared as rods (2.91 x 0.71 &#956;m in size). It grew at temperatures ranging from 4 to 30°C, with a growth optimum at 28°C. In order to find out the status of magnetotactic bacteria at three different sediment in Czech Republic, samples collected from both standing and running freshwaters were subjected to molecular diversity analysis by using 16S rRNA gene approach. Total community DNA from sediment sample was isolated and used for PCR, cloning and sequence analysis. Peptidolytic microbial community of methanogenic reactors from two modified UASBs of brewery industries BJM

We studied the peptide-degrading anaerobic communities of methanogenic reactors from two mesophilic full-scale modified upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors treating brewery wastewater in Colombia. Most probable number (MPN) counts varied between 7.1 x 10(8) and 6.6 x 10(9) bacteria/g volatile suspended solids VSS (Methanogenic Reactor 1) and 7.2 x 10(6) and 6.4 x 10(7) bacteria/g (VSS) (Methanogenic Reactor 2). Phylogenetic analysis of Bacteroidales 16S rRNA gene sequences from human and animal effluents and assessment of ruminant faecal pollution by real-time PCR ArchiMer

Aims: The aims of this study were to evaluate the host-specific distribution of Bacteroidales 16S rRNA gene sequences from human- and animal-related effluents and faeces, and to define a ruminant-specific marker. Methods and Results: Bacteroidales 16S rRNA gene clone libraries were constructed from samples of effluent (sewage, bovine manure and pig slurry) and faeces (human, bovine, pig and wild bird), using PCR primers targeting order Bacteroidales. The phylogenetic analysis revealed six main distinct human-, bovine-, pig- and wild bird-specific clusters. Phylogenetic analysis on the soil bacteria distributed in karst forest BJM

Phylogenetic composition of bacterial community in soil of a karst forest was analyzed by culture-independent molecular approach. The bacterial 16S rRNA gene was amplified directly from soil DNA and cloned to generate a library. After screening the clone library by RFLP, 16S rRNA genes of representative clones were sequenced and the bacterial community was analyzed phylogenetically. The 16S rRNA gene inserts of 190 clones randomly selected were analyzed by RFLP and generated 126 different RFLP types. Quality assessment of ice-stored tropical yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and influence of vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging ArchiMer

Metagenomic, microbial, chemical and sensory analyses of Thunnus albacares from Martinique and stored in ice (AIR – 0 °C), vacuum (VP – 4/8 °C) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP – 4/8 °C) (70% CO2 – 30% O2) were carried out. The organoleptic rejection of AIR tuna was observed at day 13 when total bacterial counts equaled 106–107 CFU g−1. No extension of shelf-life was provided by VP and MAP.
